Austerity driving Polish ecommerce boom

Poland’s slowing economy means an increasing number of shoppers are going online in the hunt for a bargain, reports ft.com.

According to industry figures, less than half the country currently shops online – only 40 per cent of Poles admitted to going online for their wares – but this number is growing by an impressive 30 per cent a year and looks set to continue.

Consequently this makes Poland, along with the Czech Republic, the fastest growing e-commerce market in the EU according to industry lobby group Ecommerce Europe, cited by ecommerceheadlines.com.

Europe overall saw ecommerce grow by 21 per cent last year to 310 billion euros, signalling Europeans are developing a preference for making an online payment for goods over heading to the high street.

Wojciech Czernecki, a representative of online price search firm Nokaut Group, believes the ecommerce slowdown means consumers are more willing to look for cheaper prices.

Furthermore, market research firm PMR also commented on the rise of ecommerce in the region: “Online shopping is growing in popularity. In a survey conducted by PMR in April 2012, over 40 per cent stated that they had shopped online over the last six months. Among people below 35 the proportion amounts to nearly 70 per cent.”
