Brits have been dubbed a “nation of online shoppers” after being revealed to spend more online per person than any other country in the world, freshbusinessthinking.com reports.

In its latest ‘International Communications Market Report’, Ofcom found that Brits spent an average of £1,083 per person per year in online shopping alone. This comprehensively beat nearest rivals Australia and Sweden, who respectively averaged £842 and £747 in online payments over the same period. This makes Britain the first country to surpass the £1,000 marker.

Brits aren’t just shopping from the comfort of their own homes, however, but are increasingly doing so on the go. Nearly a quarter (23.1 per cent) of those surveyed said they use smartphones to visit retail websites, placing Britain top of the five largest European countries.

Given these figures, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Brits were also named as the most web-friendly nation on earth, taking over Japan for the first time to become the country which downloads more megabytes of data per head.

During December 2011, Brits averaged 424MB per person, whilst Japan reached 392MB and America (which ranked in sixth), averaged 319MB.

“We have a long history of catalogue shopping in the UK, and as many daily activities are increasingly carried out online, the internet has become the new destination for many shoppers,” Ofcom’s director of research James Thickett told belfasttelegraph.co.uk.
