Nighttime online shopping sales boosted by new parents

Research conducted by Amazon revealed that the number of transactions for baby products increased by 78 per cent in the hours between midnight and 6am.

Experts claim that new parents who are being kept awake by the babies, are turning to internet shopping. This has led to the term ‘shopturnals’ being coined to describe the social group.

Families expert Dr Rosemary Leonard told dailymail.co.uk: “As a parent, getting through the night in one piece can be hugely challenging.”

She also said that women were more likely to get up in the nighttime than men, saying: “Interestingly, the study revealed that mums are twice as likely to get up during the night than dads.

Some of the most popular items for nighttime sales are nursing pads and sleep trainers.

As well as baby accessories, items such as blackout blinds were also popular night purchases, as is racy novel ’50 Shades of Grey’, zumba kits, Adele CD’s and the Harry Potter film DVD’s.

In the survey of 2,000, online shopping was found to be the second popular evening activity after reading, ahead of watching TV and listening to music.
