Online retail giant Amazon has revealed that ten million online shoppers in the US tried a free trial of its 2-day delivery service during this year’s festive season.
Prime, Amazon’s $99-a-year membership program (£79-a-year in the UK) offering free, 2-day delivery, was launched ten years ago. Since its inception, the service has developed many new features including instant video, music and Kindle ebook perks.
Now, the staggering ten million US trials indicate that fast, free delivery is more important than ever to customers. In the US, Sunday Delivery was a particularly popular proposition, while customers requesting Same-Day Delivery increased tenfold in 2014 compared with the previous year. Amazon.com also shipped to 185 different countries worldwide.
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, said: “We are excited to welcome more than ten million new members to Amazon Prime this holiday season…We are working hard to make Prime even better and expanding the recently launched Prime Now in 2015.”
Other figures released in the company’s Boxing Day press release include 60 per cent of all Christmas-time transactions were made on a mobile device, while the total US holiday sales from the Amazon app for smartphones doubled this year.
Cyber Monday was unveiled as amazon.com’s peak mobile shopping day, beating out competition from Black Friday and Boxing Day, ecommercebytes.com notes.
