Tesco has revealed it is to open a new online store after a growth surge in online payment transactions.

The supermarket’s newest dotcom store has been opened in Crawley, West Sussex. It will bring approximately 700 new jobs to the area, boosting the local economy and it is now the fifth dotcom store owned by the company.

These dedicated dotcom stores are laid out like supermarkets, however instead of customers, they have product pickers. The online shopping basket submitted by the consumer is made up from the store’s produce and delivered to their home.

An online sales growth of 15 per cent for the year is the reason behind the creation of the new store. The facility will allow the supermarket to create more delivery slots for consumers, as well as offer more products.

Talking about the new store, Barney Burgess, the company’s chief operation officer for grocery home shopping, told internetretailing.net: “Dotcom stores are an increasingly important part of our service for customers. More and more customers are using their computers and smartphones to shop.

“This state-of-the-art facility will increase our capacity in the area, enabling us to offer an excellent and convenient service to our customers,” he added, also cited by information-age.com.
